Jaylan Nelson is an interdisciplinary artist who explores self-reflection and self-expression, faith, and hints at deep-rooted societal issues within his art to emphasize their importance in culture. Born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, Nelson is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, expecting to graduate in the spring of 2026.
With over seven years of experience in photography and videography, Nelson has developed a unique visual style across various types of media. Before focusing primarily on digital formats, he showcased his paintings and drawings broadly between 2018 and 2022, participating in seven exhibitions at the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts and earning two showcase awards for his art. He has also worked with numerous local businesses and organizations, producing photography and video projects throughout Montgomery and Birmingham, Alabama.
In addition to his independent work, Nelson currently is an intern specializing in the creative department of a nationally renowned organization, AARP, further cultivating his skills and abilities in professional settings. His work is deeply informed by his faith, allowing his artistic voice to be heard and felt through all of his projects. Through each medium he chooses, Nelson aims to convey authenticity, meaning, and purpose.
